FAQ

How often should I see the dentist?

Seeing a dentist on a regular basis is vital to maintain good oral health and well-being.

The traditional rule of thumb is to visit the dentist every six months.

The best way to repair, alleviate and prevent dental concerns is to visit your dentist for regular check-ups. People with a higher risk of dental disease like smokers or people with a particularly sweet tooth, will find it helpful to visit the dentist up to every three or four months. Let’s keep our mouths healthy and fit just like our bodies!

What’s the best technique for cleaning my teeth?

The best way to brush your teeth is to hold the toothbrush at an angle of 45 degrees, with the bristles aimed at your gum line. The tiny area between the teeth and the gum is a great spot for bacteria and plaque to accumulate, so it is important to brush this area well. At Haberfield Dental we also love a toothbrush with a small head and softer bristles, so it is not so abrasive on your teeth!

Select a toothpaste that contains fluoride which will combine with minerals in your saliva to toughen your tooth enamel and help prevent decay.

Flossing has been proven to significantly reduce the risk of gum disease. You would ideally floss your teeth every day and if possible, before you brush your teeth.

Do I need to have X-rays?

X-rays provide your dentist with additional important information about the condition of your teeth and will reveal any hidden decay. Here at Haberfield Dental, for your own convenience we have our own X-ray machine on-site, so it is all done at the time of your appointment without any delays.

Generally x-rays are taken every 2 years depending on decay risk or if there is acute pain.

Some patients express concern about the amount of radiation there is when taking x-rays. Dental x-ray radiation is equivalent to 2% of your normal everyday radiation or 0.2% equivalent to a 6-hour flight. As they are digital, the exposure time is very low and is actually the lowest amount of exposure in any industry. It is important to remember x-rays provide a full examination to ensure you receive accurate assessment of your dentition.

When is it right for my child’s first dentist visit?

Each child is different so dentists advise that the first appointment be at 2 years of age unless there is an issue prior.

In this first visit the dentist is checking to see that their development (mouth, gums and teeth) is normal and detect any potential problems that can be managed before any serious conditions occur. Further, it is providing the opportunity for the child to be educated in good oral health care.

Does the practice participate in Medicare's Child Dental Benefits Scheme?

Haberfield Dental Practice welcomes the Federal Government’s Child Dental Benefits Scheme.

Children that are eligible to participate in this dental scheme can receive up to the value of $1,000 in dental treatment over two consecutive calendar years.

If your child is eligible, please inform the staff at the time you schedule your child’s next dental appointment.

Please note that some dental services may not be bulk-billed. If the service is not bulk-billed you will be informed prior to treatment of the out-of-pocket expense.

Does the practice offer third party finance?

Haberfield Dental Practice are proud to be partnered with Afterpay to help others access the dental care they need, when they need it.

What is Afterpay?

Afterpay is a dental payment plan that allows patients to pay off their treatment in 4 fortnightly installments. The amount is dependent on your limit.

Will I need to pay a deposit?

No. However if Afterpay does not cover the entire cost of the treatment, then the remainder will need to be paid in full.

How do I apply for Afterpay?

Applying for Afterpay is very simple and easy. There is no paperwork needed as the application is done online via the app and by the dental staff. All patients need to provide is an Australian photo ID (driver’s licence, passport or proof of age card) and their contact details.

When approved, we can start the treatment on the day as most approvals are instant.

You can download the Afterpay app for iOS devices here and for Android here.

Otherwise, please visit Afterpay website.
