Dental braces are devices used in orthodontics that align and straighten teeth and help to position them with regard to a person’s bite, while also working to improve dental health. Braces can be used to enhance appearance and can be used to improve the function/alignment of the teeth. Dental braces are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to assist in shaping the teeth and jaws.
The teeth move when the arch wire puts pressure on the brackets and teeth. Sometimes springs or rubber bands are used to put more force in a specific direction.
Type of Braces
Traditional metal wired braces are stainless steel and are sometimes used in combination with titanium. Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces. They have a metal bracket with elastic (rubber band) ties holding the wire onto the metal braces.
“Clear” braces serve as a cosmetic alternative to traditional metal braces by blending in more with the natural colour of the teeth and having a less conspicuous or hidden appearance. Typically, these braces are made of ceramic or plastic materials and function in a similar manner to traditional metal braces.
In order to avoid the teeth moving back to their original position, retainers may be worn once the treatment with braces is complete. They can be either fixed retainers which require a wire to be glued to the back of the front six teeth, or a removable retainer which is worn each night to prevent the teeth from moving.
